It's plain to see, dear readers, why this humble writer didn't go into the theater. But, finding myself in desperate need of a laugh, fortunately the City of Towers has plenty of venues for those who did. Such as the Khavish Theater in the Den'iyes district of Sharn (which, by the way, is a little slice of home for zil like me).
All of the acts were very entertaining that night. The singers sang, the musicians played, the actors fret and strutted, all to moderate applause as well as no small amount of Crowns thrown at their feet.
Then Erej Eddleton Essenfeld took the stage. Mister Essenfeld purports to be a pioneer of a new style of comedy that the critics have dubbed “experiential”.
Experiential comedy is not simple one-liners, or puns, or even setup and punchline jokes (like the dud I attempted at the beginning of this article). No, experiential comedy is about the things we all do, say, and talk about every day but fail to see the inherent comedy in until a sharp wit like Mister Essenfeld points it out.
Let me tell you, I have not laughed harder in quite a long time. Mister Essenfeld's experiences are right on target. An owlbear is neither an owl nor a bear and does need to make up its mind! “Blink Dog” is a silly name! All dogs do blink already! Displacer Beast? I hardly know her beast! And what is the deal with the food they serve on the Lightning Rail?
I happy to say that the crowd, who (like me) were a bit confused by this new style of entertainment, laughed uproariously as Mister Essefeld went on about the minutiae of daily life and pointed out each and every foible. By the end of his set, the applause was thunderous and I definitely saw a few Sovereigns clink onto the stage as well.
We got a million of them in the Corners of Khorvaire.
